PLAINVIEW, NY — A 39-year-old woman has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal car accident that occurred on New Year’s Day in Plainview. The incident took place when her SUV struck and killed a pedestrian crossing Old Country Road.
The victim, identified as Kevin Lawry, 38, was crossing the roadway from north to south near Floral Avenue when he was hit by a 2018 Jeep Wrangler traveling eastbound. Witnesses reported that the vehicle did not stop after the collision and continued eastward, prompting an immediate investigation by Nassau police.
Lawry sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by a police medic shortly after the incident, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
Following a detailed investigation, authorities were able to identify the driver of the Jeep as Veronica Marmol, a resident of College Point. She was arrested without incident in connection with the hit-and-run. Police have stated that Marmol is scheduled for arraignment on charges related to the accident at the First District Court in Hempstead.
The investigation revealed that the collision occurred during the early evening hours, with conditions on the roadway remaining clear at the time of the incident. Officials emphasized the importance of responsible driving, especially on significant holidays when pedestrian traffic may increase.
