Officer in critical condition following collision with speeding Mustang driver

Car accident in Queens

A police officer was hospitalized in critical condition following a serious car accident on the Long Island Expressway in Brentwood on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. when the driver of a speeding Mustang struck the officer’s cruiser, resulting in the vehicle flipping off the highway and crashing into a tree.

According to Suffolk County Police, the Mustang was reported traveling at nearly 100 mph when it sideswiped the police cruiser. Officer Brendon Gallagher, who was conducting a traffic stop at the time, initiated a pursuit after the Mustang clipped his vehicle. The force of the impact caused Gallagher’s cruiser to lose control, leading to a significant crash.

Emergency responders faced significant challenges in extricating Officer Gallagher from the wreckage, taking approximately 30 minutes to pull him from the damaged vehicle. Reports indicate that he sustained serious injuries and was bleeding heavily at the scene.

Gallagher was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was placed on a ventilator. Medical staff reported that he required 25 units of blood during surgery and remains in critical condition as of Monday.
