In a tragic incident in Patchogue, NY, an elderly man faces charges after a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a young pedestrian last year. Suffolk police have apprehended and charged a 73-year-old man in connection with a fatal accident that claimed the life of 25-year-old Nicholas Puzio.
The accused, Jesus Matute, is alleged to have been behind the wheel of a 2005 Nissan SUV, which is the second vehicle implicated in the incident. The accident occurred on March 12, 2023, when the SUV reportedly struck Puzio on Medford Avenue and then fled the scene.
Matute, who was brought into custody at the 5th Precinct in Patchogue, is expected to face the court at the Riverside criminal court. The apprehension followed a thorough investigation conducted by the Major Case Squad.
Puzio, a resident of Farmingville, was making his way on foot across Medford Avenue at the intersection of Oak Street in the early hours of the morning when he was initially hit by a white sedan. In the moments following the initial collision, he was struck again by Matute’s gray Nissan Armada. Unfortunately, after the impact by the two separate vehicles, both of which left the scene, Puzio succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at Long Island Community Hospital.
