A serious collision involving a semi-truck and two cars occurred on Thursday afternoon in Dix Hills, resulting in multiple injuries. The accident took place at approximately 2:20 p.m. near the intersection of Deer Park Road and East Deer Park Road, just north of the Northern State Parkway, as confirmed by officials from the Dix Hills Fire Department.
Investigators reported that a 2006 Toyota Prius, driven by 23-year-old Roberto Cano of Smithtown, was traveling south on Deer Park Road when it collided with a northbound 2025 Kenworth semi-truck. The impact caused the Prius to subsequently crash into a 2012 Hyundai Sonata, which was stopped at a red light at the intersection.
Firefighters responding to the scene utilized a hydraulic rescue tool to extricate Cano from the wreckage of the severely damaged Prius. Although rescue efforts took approximately 20 minutes, the driver was heavily pinned inside the vehicle, necessitating urgent action from emergency personnel.
Cano sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi-truck, 53-year-old Wagner Lopez of Dix Hills, sustained minor injuries and was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore. Fortunately, the driver of the Hyundai Sonata was unharmed in the incident.
