A police chase originating in Queens culminated in a fatal shooting in Long Island, resulting in multiple crashes and injuries. Authorities reported that eight individuals, including five Nassau County police officers and two New York Police Department officers, were hospitalized following the incident.
The sequence of events unfolded late Friday night when officers attempted to apprehend a suspect driving dangerously in Queens. As the police pursued the vehicle, the suspect allegedly tried to ram two NYPD officers. According to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, the chase escalated as the suspect continued into Nassau County, prompting officers to try and intercept him at the intersection of Merrick Avenue and Sunrise Highway.
At approximately 11 p.m., the suspect collided with two police vehicles, which were attempting to box him in. Ryder described how the NYPD alerted officers in Nassau County to the situation as the suspect drove recklessly, ignoring attempts to stop him. The suspect then continued his flight, striking another police car before veering down Sunrise Highway the wrong way and colliding head-on with a civilian’s vehicle, leading to injuries to the occupant.
As the dangerous pursuit continued, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed near Hicksville Road and Sunrise Highway. After the vehicle came to a stop, police officers exited their vehicles in an attempt to secure the scene.
