Man Charged After Backing Into Another Car on Belt Parkway

Car accident in Queens

NEW YORK  – A man has been charged with staging a car accident on the Belt Parkway. Maikel Martinez, a 28-year-old from Brooklyn, was reportedly inside a silver Honda Civic that abruptly cut off another vehicle driven by Asphia Natasha.

The crash was captured on Natasha’s dashboard camera, which showed the Honda Civic reversing into her car after the initial collision. Witnesses noted suspicious behavior from the occupants of the Civic following the impact. According to reports, after the crash, the occupants held a plastic tarp against the rear window and rearranged their seating positions within the vehicle. Notably, a woman identified by Martinez as his wife exited the driver’s seat.

Two additional individuals who were present in the Civic, a man and a woman, have not yet been identified, contributing to the ongoing investigation. Following the collision, a red Kia Sport positioned itself in front of the Honda Civic. The male occupant of the Civic then transferred to the Kia Sport, which subsequently left the scene.

Martinez was taken into custody upon returning to New York from Ecuador on November 7. He faces serious charges including staging a motor vehicle accident, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, conspiracy, and insurance fraud. If found guilty, he could face a prison sentence ranging from two to seven years.
