In Calverton, during the morning commute on Friday, a fatal collision claimed the life of one driver at a junction near the ramp to the Long Island Expresso at exit 71. The incident occurred at 7:05 a.m. and involved a southbound vehicle on Edwards Avenue colliding with another vehicle attempting a left turn onto the expressway ramp, Suffolk County authorities reported.
The force of the collision was such that it resulted in the death of one of the drivers, while the other sustained only minor injuries. Paramedics pronounced the deceased at the scene. As of now, the identities of those involved have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
This tragic event led to a temporary closure of the surroundings to allow emergency services and accident reconstruction teams to carry out their investigation and clear the wreckage. Traffic was diverted, causing significant congestion in the area. Motorists were advised to seek alternative routes until the road was reopened.
Officials have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, and the investigation is ongoing. The Suffolk County Police Department’s Vehicular Crime Unit is asking any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward to assist in piecing together the circumstances that led to this fatal accident.
