In West Hempstead, a Freeport man admitted his role in a fatal crash that took the life of six-year-old Katerine Vanegas-Hernandez. Jorge Bonilla Gutierrez, aged 18, pleaded guilty to a series of charges including second-degree manslaughter and assault, as well as driving while intoxicated. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that Gutierrez could face six to 12 years of imprisonment, with sentencing set for July 30.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of August 7, when Gutierrez, under the influence of alcohol and driving a Nissan Pathfinder, ran a red light and collided with a Toyota Corolla that was stationary on Hempstead Turnpike. The severity of the crash resulted in the Corolla being forced off the road and colliding with a tree. At the same time, Gutierrez’s vehicle flipped multiple times.
