Nassau County Police were called to the scene of an automobile accident in New Cassel on May 5, 2024, which resulted in a pedestrian fatality, marking one of several similar incidents in a period of 24 hours and the weekend’s third pedestrian-related death on Long Island.
Authorities reported that a male pedestrian was fatally struck by a westbound 2015 BMW while crossing Prospect Avenue near State Street at approximately 10:58 p.m. The 27-year-old driver of the BMW stopped and remained at the scene. However, a second vehicle hit the pedestrian and fled the scene without stopping, continuing west on Prospect Avenue. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released by the police.
The victim sustained severe head and chest injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Nassau police have shared that their investigation into the incident is actively ongoing.
Earlier in the day, at around 12:13 a.m., a man from Huntington Station suffered critical injuries after being hit by a vehicle on the north shoulder of West Hills Road in Dix Hills. The driver involved in this incident did not stop and is being sought by the police.
The injured man, identified as Amilar Velasquez, 37, was admitted to Huntington Hospital in a critical state following the accident.
