Weekend Crashes in Nassau Claim Two Lives; Woman Faces DWI Charges

In Old Bethpage on Friday evening, a 64-year-old East Meadow resident was arrested and charged with drunk driving after being involved in a collision that resulted in the death of an 82-year-old man. Nassau County police reported that the incident was one of two fatal accidents over the weekend.

The accused, Cheryl Bergenstock, was behind the wheel of a 2020 Subaru Forester on Round Swamp Road near Winding Road around 7:20 p.m., when she collided with a 2019 Toyota Corolla driven by Alan Goldsand of Old Bethpage. Goldsand suffered critical injuries and was taken to an area hospital by the Nassau County Police Department Aviation Unit, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Following the accident, Bergenstock received medical attention at a hospital and was subsequently found to be under the influence of alcohol. She is facing charges of second-degree DWI and second-degree vehicular assault. Her arraignment details had not been disclosed at the time of the report.

The second fatal incident occurred in Garden City, Nassau County, involving a 28-year-old motorcyclist and a 66-year-old driver. On Saturday just before 4 p.m., the motorcyclist, riding a 2021 Kawasaki, was struck by a 2007 Lexus on Old Country Road near Prescott Street. The motorcyclist, whose identity has not been released, was declared dead at the scene.
