Authorities are conducting an investigation into a significant accident involving an SUV in Queens, New York, which resulted in an explosion on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. on 133rd Street near 131st Avenue when an unoccupied vehicle parked with a propane tank in its trunk exploded. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as no one was inside the vehicle at the time of the explosion.
The explosion sent debris flying, damaging nearby properties. Shards of glass shattered the windows of at least five residences, while large parts of the vehicle fell onto several nearby cars, resulting in extensive damage. Eyewitnesses captured video footage of the SUV engulfed in flames, accompanied by thick clouds of smoke rising into the morning sky.
The owner of the SUV has been identified as Dinell Harricharan, who remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Sources indicate that Harricharan, a plumber by trade, mentioned the presence of a welding tank in the vehicle, which may have been leaking before the accident occurred. According to FDNY Deputy Chief George Healy, the explosion may have been caused by a malfunction related to the storage of the gas cylinders. “Especially with gas cylinders, they have to be stored upright; they can’t be stored on the side. That will be looked at in the investigation,” Healy stated.
