QUEENS, NEW YORK (October 30, 2024) – A female pedestrian suffered critical injuries in a car accident near the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard and 163 Avenue on Friday evening. According to authorities, the incident occurred as the woman attempted to cross the street and was struck by a black vehicle.
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, where they found the victim unconscious in the roadway with a severe leg injury. She was rushed to Jamaica Hospital for treatment, and her current condition remains severe. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is underway.
Statistics from the New York City Department of Health indicate that a significant portion of pedestrian accidents occurs close to victims’ homes. Specifically, over half of pedestrian fatalities involving older adults and nearly three-quarters involving children happen within ten blocks of home. Such statistics underscore the importance of vigilance among motorists, particularly in residential and high pedestrian traffic areas.
To mitigate the risk of pedestrian accidents, drivers are urged to remain alert and attentive while on the road. Slowing down in areas known for heavy foot traffic can prevent accidents and save lives. Failure to do so may lead to a driver being held liable for injuries sustained by pedestrians. Various factors, including distraction from mobile devices or non-compliance with traffic signals, are often contributors to pedestrian collisions.
