MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — A police pursuit that began in New York City ended tragically in Massapequa late Friday night, resulting in the fatal shooting of a man by law enforcement officers. The chase left several individuals injured, including police officers and a civilian.
The incident originated in Queens, where officers from the NYPD attempted to pull over a vehicle driven by the suspect. In response to the attempted stop, the driver sped away, leading officers on a dangerous pursuit across county lines into Nassau County, ultimately culminating on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder detailed the chaotic events during a press conference Saturday. He indicated that the suspect attempted to ram two NYPD patrol cars while evading arrest. “The suspect’s actions resulted in injuries to officers and a civilian during the pursuit,” Ryder explained.
According to Ryder, the NYPD communicated their operations to Nassau County authorities as the vehicle advanced toward their jurisdiction. Officers attempted to box in the suspect’s vehicle on Sunrise Highway, but he resisted arrest and fled, nearly colliding with police in the process. Officers had to take evasive action to avoid being hit.
The fleeing vehicle continued down Sunrise Highway at a high rate of speed, where it struck another police car. The driver then proceeded to travel the wrong way before eventually returning to the correct lanes and colliding with a civilian vehicle.
