Speeding Driver Sentenced to 3-9 Years for Fatal Crown Heights Collision

Car accident in Queens

A 25-year-old Queens man has been sentenced to three to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter for causing a fatal car accident in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, according to the District Attorney’s office. The incident, which took place on March 13, 2023, led to the death of 56-year-old David Ellis.

While addressing the gravity of the situation, District Attorney condemned the actions of Elijah Lucaine of Cambria Heights, Queens. “This defendant’s reckless decision to speed and disobey traffic lights cost an innocent man his life and endangered many others,” Gonzalez stated. “He has now been held accountable for his criminal conduct. I remain committed to keeping Brooklyn’s streets safe for all.”

Lucaine was caught by police driving a 2015 white Infiniti at a high speed, weaving through traffic and running multiple red lights. His reckless driving culminated in a high-speed collision at approximately 4:45 p.m. at the intersection of Crown Street and Nostrand Avenue. Lucaine ran a red light and struck a black Acura at a speed of 70 mph in a 25-mph zone, causing significant damage.
