Two NYPD officers are recovering from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash in Queens on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the intersection of 120th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard while the officers were pursuing suspects from a nearby robbery.
Prior to the accident, the officers were actively searching for individuals who had robbed a smoke shop located at Merrick Boulevard and 220th Street. During their pursuit, their squad car collided with two other vehicles that were not connected to the robbery investigation, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Emergency responders from the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. The injured officers were transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, three individuals from the other two vehicles involved in the collision were taken to North Shore Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Fortunately, authorities have reported that all patients are in stable condition.
The investigation into the robbery has revealed that the suspects fled the scene in a white U-Haul vehicle. As of now, law enforcement officials have made some arrests connected to the robbery case; however, the exact number of arrests has not been disclosed, nor is it clear whether there are additional suspects still at large.
